In 1706 he was created Marquess of Lindsey and in 1715 he was further honoured when he was made Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. His son, the second Duke, was called to the House of Lords in 1715 through a writ of acceleration as Baron Willoughby de Eresby.He later served as Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. He was a General in the Army and served as Master of the Horse from 1766 to 1778.
